IMSA Traffic Signal Senior Field Technician III Certification Program

Program Details

The IMSA Traffic Signal Senior Field Technician III Certification is designed to test an individual’s knowledge and skills of advanced traffic signal technologies used in the industry.

What Knowledge Should I Have Before Registering for the Program?

  • Thorough understanding of Traffic Signal Technician I and Traffic Signal Field Technician II program content. 
  • Types of traffic signals include mast arm signals, span wire signals and beacons. 
  • Traffic signal field devices, such as signal heads, signal hardware, ped heads, ped buttons, signal operation and the applications and theory that apply. 
  • Underground construction includes raceways, pull boxes, foundations, construction elements with equipment, grades, concrete, pedestrian access, conductors and cabling, calculations, specifications and regulations. 
  • Overhead construction, including equipment, installation of poles, mast arms, span wires, signal heads, luminaires, solar and wiring. 
  • Electrical theory such as safety, current, voltage, resistance, power, Ohms Law, meters, circuits, voltage drop and service disconnects. 
  • Vehicle and ped detection which includes ALL types of detection and the theory that goes with that: loops, magnetic, magnetometers, ultrasonic, inferred, radar, LIDAR, video and ped buttons.  
  • Controller cabinets, theory and ALL equipment that goes inside the cabinet: types of cabinets, controllers, monitors, load switches, flashers, relays, switches, BIUs and SIUs, cabinet circuits, wiring, battery backup, detection, communications, preemption, coordination, phasing and timing. 
  • Signal maintenance includes tools, equipment, preventative maintenance, emergency response and documentation.

What are the Prerequisites?

  • Current IMSA Traffic Signal Technician II certification
  • Five years of experience in traffic signal operations

This certification is created for those who have significant experience in the field working with traffic signal operations, maintenance and construction. This challenging exam is designed for technicians who have a vast knowledge, wide experience in the field and a thorough understanding of ALL aspects of traffic signals. Individuals must be able to demonstrate their knowledge and skill set through this certification.
