As a Traffic Signal Technician Apprentice, you’ll gain invaluable hands-on experience while helping to keep our city’s traffic systems running smoothly and safely. Traffic Signal Technician Apprentice learns routine and technical work related to the installation, construction, maintenance, repair, and inspection of traffic signals, video, and street lighting systems, and various other electrical and electronic systems and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Learns to:

  • Locate and mark traffic signals, street lighting, and underground communication equipment.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance tasks as assigned
  • Remove or install overhead street signs.
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctioning street lighting and traffic signal equipment and modular electronic and communication equipment as required.
  • Inspect traffic signal and streetlight installations made by contractors for conformance to city specifications and codes.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints and requests related to traffic signals and streetlights.
  • Maintain various types of existing traffic video systems.
  • Install and repair traffic loop, clean, repairs and change LED’s indications in traffic signal heads and cabinets as required.
  • Install underground conduit, wire, junction boxes, cabinets, switchboards, controllers, and electrical power for various pieces of equipment.
  • Repair and maintain energized overhead and underground cable, as well as conduit and wiring system.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and other specifications.
  • Respond to emergencies involving traffic and pedestrian signals, street lighting, and traffic signs.
  • Operate and control a bucket truck, compressors and lifts.
  • Develop and maintain records showing locations and types of existing underground street lighting and traffic signal systems.
  • Use the MUTCD and NEC manuals to perform tasks.
  • Follows all applicable and necessary protocols to ensure work site safety.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of work in the electrical trade or technical training in electrical circuitry and test equipment and tools; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
  • Employees must be residents of Washington State.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Within six (6) months of hire, must obtain Washington State Flagging Card and within one (1) year of hire, must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) Level I Certification for Traffic Signal Technician.
  • May be required to possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

 

Additional Information
KNOWLEDGE OF
Principles and practices in the electrical and/or electronics field as applied to installation and repair of signal circuits and systems.

ABILITY TO LEARN

  • Data communication maintenance standards and practices.
  • Techniques for troubleshooting and repairing data communication equipment and cables and malfunctioning traffic equipment.
  • Installation and testing of fiber optic cables.
  • Local, state, and federal risk mitigation guidelines and job site procedures pertaining to the industry.
  • Interpretation of electrical plans and apply to electrical circuitry including three-phase wiring.
  • Use of Microsoft Office Suite and applicable department/organization specific software and ability to learn and become skilled in the use of other specialized software and online meeting platforms as may be required.
  • Clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing, and use professional composition, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
    Responsive and flexible handling of work assignments and prioritizing work to complete assignments accurately and timely
  • Maintain a customer service orientation and positive image of the city to the public, courteous and professional approach to exchanging information, adhering to strict confidentiality requirements.
  • Regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule, including when working remotely per an approved hybrid schedule.
