Job Profile

Reporting to the Manager of Roads Operations there is an opening for a Streetlight Technologist. This position will be responsible for the following duties:

What you will be doing

  • Provide technical support to the Operations Division within the Infrastructure Services Department in the effective and efficient delivery of roadway illumination, park lighting, pedestrian level lighting, sportsfield/court lighting, specialty lighting, and power pedestals/receptacles
  • Research and recommend new technologies
  • Coordinate contracts related to the installation, operation and maintenance, and inventory of the streetlighting system
  • Participate in the development of standards, operating instructions, and inspection programs
  • Author committee and departmental reports for lighting programs
  • Budgeting, monitoring expenses, approving deviations for projects
  • Addressing concerns and inquiries raised by the general public, senior management, other agencies and Council
  • Represent the City at various meetings and legal proceedings

Education

  • Three-year diploma in Electrical, Civil or Transportation Engineering Technologist program
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) through the Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).
  • International Municipal Signal Institute (IMSA) Roadway Lighting Technician Level 1 and 2 Certification
  • International Public Safety Institute (IPSI) Roadway Lighting Technician Level I Certification is considered an asset

Experience and Knowledge

A minimum of 2 – 3 years of experience in:

  • Streetlighting, pedestrian lighting, park lighting, specialty lighting, supervision skills, communication skills with the public, council and stakeholders.
  • Electrical infrastructure
  • Litigation and discovery procedures involving related lighting programs and conducting appropriate investigations
  • Project management on multiple lighting projects (underground infrastructure related to lighting, special lighting, Business Improvement Area lighting, etc.).
  • Familiarity with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Standards, Ontario Traffic Manuals, Highway Traffic Act, Municipal Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act is critical.

Valid G driver’s license.
Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)

Your compensation

  • This position is within Grade 10 of the Inside Workers Union salary schedule, the salary range is $85,067 – $90,418. We offer a comprehensive benefits package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.

Hours of work

The current regular hours of work are in accordance with the Collective Agreement, however, currently, we are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (35 hours per week). Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings as required.
