GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is unskilled and limited semi-skilled and technical work in the operation of equipment related to street striping, traffic sign, traffic signal and streetlight maintenance with routine maintenance responsibilities for assigned equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Foreman, with direction from the Program Supervisor, and reviewed through observation, conversation, and evaluation of results achieved.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains traffic signals and associated electronic equipment including solid-state controllers, emergency vehicle pre-emption, radio communications, video camera detection, inductance loop detection and other cabinet components.
- Maintains signal system hardware such as signal and pedestrian heads, mast arms, standards, back plates, visors, signal lamps and LED lenses.
- Troubleshoots signal malfunctions; troubleshoots and replaces equipment in signal control cabinets; installs, adjusts, and replaces signal cameras; repairs wires in signal heads and bases. Maintains school crossing and other warning beacons including time clock and flasher programming.
- Installs, repairs and replaces traffic control signs and posts using aerial lift truck, gas-powered or hydraulic-powered driver and puller. Assesses post and anchor conditions, as necessary.
- Maintains computer-based sign inventory program, which includes installation and maintenance history, reflective properties assessment and hardware condition reports.
- Maintains street lighting systems, underground wiring records and spare parts inventory.
- Performs repairs to Troubleshoots street light outages; troubleshoots issues in street lighting cabinets; replaces relays, photocells, fuses, and breakers; repairs and replaces street light fixtures; replaces lamps and street light lenses in street light fixtures.
- Applies pavement-marking materials, including paint, plastic, etc., for striping streets and marking crosswalks, parking lots and curbs.
- Performs traffic counts and places traffic counters at locations, as assigned. Keep accurate records of daily activity and keep basic records and reports up to date.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the principles, safety standards, concepts and requirements contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, roadway construction and maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of the role of traffic control devices in the effort to create and maintain a safe and efficient transportation system.
- Knowledge of the principles required in traffic signal construction and maintenance. Knowledge of the basic principles of electricity and electronics.
- Ability to operate a personal computer.
- Ability to plan, organize and direct work for traffic maintenance seasonal employees.
- Ability to keep daily, monthly and annual records.
- Ability to operate an aerial lift truck, paint machines, gas-powered post driver, hydraulic post driver and puller, underground located, generator, pumps, electrical test equipment, banding machine and various power hand tools.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from high school and one year of experience in construction or equipment operation activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- IMSA signal level I certification, IMSA street sign level I desired or ability to obtain in 12 months.
- Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class B as a minimum.
EQUIPMENT USED
Operates, maintains, cleans and repairs paint machines, post drivers, aerial lift truck, sign making system and numerous hand and power tools, including airless spray guns, heat guns, oxy-acetylene burning equipment, grinder, drills, rivet guns, ladders, saws, and hammers
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work requires standing for extended periods, frequent lifting of 40 lbs. or more, frequent bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, digging, reaching, crawling, kneeling, and climbing of ladders. Operates pickup truck and backhoe, Works frequently in extreme weather. Occasionally works in confined areas and at various heights.
JOB LOCATION
All City owned buildings, parks, grounds and recreation facilities. Any off-site locations and facilities utilized as part of the City’s participation or involvement in an event, activity or job assignment.
