Signal Technician II

  • Maintains, programs, repairs, inspects, and replaces traffic control devices including traffic signal controllers and pedestrian and vehicle indications. Inspects, monitors and repairs vehicle detector loops, video detection equipment, battery back-up systems, electronic vehicle speed feedback signs, fiber optic communications equipment, closed circuit television cameras, traffic signal controller cabinets and highway lighting systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Maintains, builds, upgrades and inspects traffic signals, highway lighting, and school beacons. Performs preventive maintenance on such equipment.
  • Analyzes intersection operations.
  • Tests and inspects electronic materials, signal equipment and conflict monitors.
  • Rewires cabinets for updating and upgrading.
  • Designs and maintains temporary traffic control plans.
  • Coordinate the repair of the traffic signal fiber optic network.
  • Ensures trucks and equipment are maintained and adequately equipped and supplied.
  • Maintains work reports and records as necessary.
  • Inspects contractors work.
  • Adjusts controller programs.
  • Review the work of Traffic Signal Technicians I and instruct them in work methods and procedures.
  • Coordinates inhouse and contractor projects.
  • Participate in the County’s on call program.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Typical Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED, supplemented by college courses in electronic technology or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical devices and equipment or any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Must possess, or obtain within six (6) months of hire, a Level II Traffic Signal (Field) Technician Certification from International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.)
  • Must possess, or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire, a Traffic Signal Inspector (Florida Edition)
  • Certification from International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A).
  • Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License.
  • Must possess, or obtain within six (6) months of hire, a Florida Class “B” CDL. possess, or obtain within six (6) months of hire, a FDOT approved Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate certification.
  • Must possess, or obtain within three (3) months of hire, an OSHA bucket truck safety certification.
  • Must possess, or obtain within three (3) months of hire, an OSHA forklift safety certification.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge to build, inspect, maintain, repair and upgrade traffic signals, highway lighting, school beacons and other equipment as needed.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Ability to design a safe work zone.
  • Ability to inspect contractor’s work.
  • Ability to design and modify cabinets for special functions.
  • Ability to use, maintain and inspect equipment and tools used in construction and installation of various types of traffic control devices.
  • Ability to complete and maintain accurate records as necessary.
  • Physical ability to meet requirements of the position, including, but not limited to, climbing, loading and unloading equipment, and lifting and carrying signals.
  • Ability to work outside under inclement weather conditions.
  • Operation of aerial bucket truck and scissor type lift.
  • Operation of a sit-down forklift.
  • Accurately locate and mark underground facilities/improvements including but not limited to fiber optic cable, copper communication cable, vehicle detection, loops and lead-ins, street lights, power lines and other various traffic control devices.
  • Ability to utilize an electronic work order system.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
