The City of Kettering, Ohio is recruiting to fill the full-time position of Traffic Signal Technician in the Traffic Engineering Division of its Engineering Department. The ideal candidate will have exceptional computer, electronic, electrical, electro-mechanical and fiber optic cable skills, and will also be knowledgeable in municipal traffic signal systems and related computer software. Work is performed independently, under the general supervision of the City’s Traffic Engineer. Operates motorized equipment and vehicles, including a bucket truck. IMPORTANT: The incumbent is required to respond to 24-hour emergencies and call-outs in all weather conditions, with an on-site response time of less than one-half hour.

Performs field and workbench journeyman-level electrician and electronic technician work involving trouble-shooting, maintenance and repair of complex electronic traffic signal system equipment, traffic signal system hardware and software, and related computer components. Inspects and maintains records of the work of contractors for conformance with plans and specifications; performs utility locating for City-owned underground utilities during regular and off-duty hours; other duties as assigned.

Requirements: Must obtain and maintain an IMSA (“International Municipal Signal Association”) Level II Traffic Signal Technician Certification (Bench, Construction, Design and Field) following appointment. Must have a valid Driver’s License at the time of appointment, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of appointment. Must be available and willing to work overtime, when required, and meet the response time requirements noted above.

Must have the ability to grasp, lift and maneuver hand tools, power tools, equipment and materials, of various weights and sizes, in a manner which is safe and effective in the performance of work; ability to work at heights; ability to distinguish colors; ability to understand and follow written instructions, labels and hazard notices; knowledge of basic math; ability to understand, follow and communicate oral and written instructions; ability to exercise alertness and judgment to report and respond to possible hazards in the workplace and on public streets within the traffic flow; ability to work outside in all types of weather; and adequate physical condition to perform position duties.
