If so, then consider applying today to be an Electrical Technician with the City of Champaign Public Works Department Traffic and Lighting Division.
Responsibilities of Position
Our Electrical Technicians are part of a skilled and high performing team that keeps traffic flowing efficiently and safely by ensuring traffic signals and street lighting are maintained in good working order. They also work on crosswalk signals, pedestrian pushbuttons, school flashers, and other specialized equipment. Since continuous signal operation is paramount, Electrical Technicians must be available as needed to respond to after-hours emergency repairs. They participate in the City’s snow & ice removal efforts and respond to other emergencies that may require working up to 16-hour shifts with little to no advance notice and may assist with the City’s yard waste collection program.
Required Qualifications
• Education equivalent to an associate degree or vocational degree or certificate in Electronic Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Computer Science, Traffic Signal Technician, or a related field.
• Experience in the installation, troubleshooting, corrective repair, and preventative maintenance of the types of electrical equipment and systems found in traffic signals and similar equipment.
• An equivalent combination of education and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, or abilities will be considered.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to operate equipment such as a bucket truck and small crane hoist.
• A valid state issued driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Forklift certification and State of Illinois Class B CDL license without air brake restriction are required within a timeline approved by the Traffic and Lighting Supervisor.
• Ability to perform essential functions that require physical agility as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
• International Municipal Signal Association Traffic Signal Technician or other relevant certification.
• Experience repairing or maintaining traffic signal equipment, street lighting, crosswalk signals, school flashers, or similar equipment,
• Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems with traffic signal or streetlight system malfunctions.
• Experience with snow and ice removal.
Drug screening, driving abstract, and ongoing random drug testing will be required. The starting salary is $31.53 per hour, plus an excellent fringe benefit package.
